Here are some thoughts for the upcoming week…

Republican Presidential candidate Governor John Kasich is a RINO.  He  has been anti-gun until 2015 (that’s when the NRA changed his grade from a “F” to an “A”), thinks that the Iran nuclear deal is a good one,  is soft on immigration, and supports Obama’s nomination to the Supreme Court.  Like all politicians, he says what we want to hear, but his past has been more Liberal than Conservative. He needs to give up his campaign and not play spoiler.

Our Government?


WARNING:  The following post can be considered a rant worthy of the Tin Hat Society.  Read at your own risk!

The preamble of the Constitution states proudly, “WE THE PEOPLE…”  The founding document of the country clearly states that the People are in charge of the Government, not the other way around.  However, that no longer appears to be the case.

Governments always seek more power, and the current political parties, both Democrat and Republican, aid in that quest.  It is very apparent that the political parties maliciously attempt to strip the public of it’s voice and the seizure of personal liberties, thus granting by proxy, more governmental power.  It almost seems that that there are more people voting to give away their rights than defending them.

Let’s start by looking at the Democrats and their supporters in this year’s elections.

The Democrats have stated in so many words that they want to strip you of your First and Second Amendment rights.  If you speak out against the Party’s platforms, you must be silenced even thought these same people state that they want to hear diverse opinions!!  Shouting down, ostracizing, and even physical violence have been employed to this end.  The Liberal wing of the Democrats also state that no matter what your religious views are, you must be tolerant and accommodating of other belief systems, whether it’s baking a cake for the wedding of a gay couple, or accepting of a person whose religion states that you are to be killed because you do not believe in the same religion as they do.  They claim to be for the children, yet support abortion.  They state that they are for the Citizens of this country, pledging to protect everyone, and yet allow the borders to be porous and importing potential terrorists.  Last, they wish to deny the citizenry the means to protect themselves by stating it’s for the public good, but allowed thousands of those same weapons to fall into the hands of narco-terrorists resulting in thousands of deaths.

And that, my friends, is only the tip of the iceberg for these clowns.  Confusing at best, deadly at worst, and so power-hungry it is unbelievable.  If you don’t believe me, look at the Hildebeast’s career, follow the money, the scandals, and the trail of bodies with the power that she and her husband have accumulated, and that is the embodiment of the worst-person to have in charge of this country.

The Republicans are better, not by much, though…

After 9/11, one of the most egregious pieces of legislation that violated an American’s civil rights was passed (the Patriot Act), and two new Federal bureaucracies were created:  The Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Safety Administration.  Passed on the Republican’s watch, these two agencies join the mindless alphabet soup of Federal agencies that rule and regulate the average American’s lives with and without Congressional approval, and the Patriot Act enables Constitutional rights to be suspended indefinitely.  Funding for the agencies is passed without batting an eye, and the Patriot Act renewed without much argument.

Additionally, when confronted with the constant overreach of the Obama Administration, Congressional Republicans pleaded with the voters for several election cycles to elect Republicans to Congress to counteract, nullify, and overturn the damaging policies of the Administration.  By and large, they have not only been ineffective, but complicit in the continued assault on the American people’s rights and pocketbooks even with majorities in the House and Senate.

And they state that they need a majority in the House, the Senate, and a Republican in the White House.  And if they get it, what excuse will they make to break or ignore their campaign promises?

Let’s be clear – it doesn’t matter who is in power in our government – Democrats and Republicans – they will both screw over the American People.  Democrats will apparently do it faster than the Republicans, but the result will be the same.

Excerpts from Paul Driessen’ article “Washington’s Despotic Lawlessness”:

Washington is out of control. Legislators, judges and unelected bureaucrats want to control our lives, livelihoods and living standards, with no accountability even for major errors, calculated deception, or deliberate, often illegal assaults on our liberties and on citizens who resist the advancing Leviathan.

No one even knows how many Executive Branch agencies there are – estimates range from 60 to 438 – much less how many new rules they implement and impose each year. Officially, Crews says, they issued a staggering 3,554 new rules in 2014, while President Obama signed “only” 226 new laws enacted by Congress. Worse, of the 53,838 (!) formal final regulations included in the Federal Register from 2001 through 2014, only 160 (0.3%) received a “cost-benefit” analysis; we have no idea how the rest affect us.

Infinitely worse, this tip of the iceberg does not include tens of thousands of decrees issued in the form of:

  • notices, bulletins, proclamations, circulars, guidance memos, and new or revised interpretations, policy statements and procedures;
  • investigations, inquiries, warning letters, negotiated settlements to legal actions (often involving collusion between agencies and activist groups), explicit or veiled threats of legal action, armed agents raiding homes and businesses, or adverse publicity, coordinated with activists and the media; as well as
  • blog posts, news releases, and emails or telephone calls to citizens or company employees.

All these actions have the force and effect of law. But few or none are covered by Administrative Procedures Act “public notice and comment” requirements, so they often escape scrutiny by courts, watchdogs and Congress. Many are supported only by “homogenized,” manipulated data; elaborate, imaginative or imaginary regulatory benefits; cavalier dismissal of costs; and no mention of benefits from the activity, chemical, energy source, industry or jobs being regulated, sometimes into oblivion.

America’s “soft despotism” is light years from the atrocities and gulags of its infamous predecessors. But it is highly effective nonetheless. The same agencies write, impose, enforce and adjudicate the rules, and impose punishment for infractions. They work tirelessly and imperiously to “fundamentally transform” our nation’s legal, energy, economic and social systems…

They impose edicts that would never be supported by the People or enacted by Congress, and that they rarely if ever apply to themselves. They lavish billions on allies, while denying funding and legitimacy to critics, siccing IRS dogs on opposition groups, and threatening civil and criminal “racketeering” actions…

The Politicians have been actively dividing the American People into separate groups – the rich and the poor, the oppressed and the privileged, the police and the “innocent”, the whites and the non-whites, etc., etc., etc…  Pandering to each group to “fix” things if they are elected.  News flash – politicians cannot fix a damn thing!!  In fact, they usually make things worse!

The War on Poverty has been a dismal failure – billions have been spent, and the poverty rate is essentially unchanged.  The War on Drugs has not eliminated the drug trade despite the billions spent and thousands of arrests.  Obamacare is imploding, and just as many people are without health insurance because they cannot afford the most basic plan.

Where has this all gone wrong?  Let’s start with the following two examples:

The Constitution states that the Senators were to be appointed by the Legislatures of the states they represented in Article 1 Section 3.  This was changed by the 17th Amendment in 1913, which allowed for the direct election of Senators by the population.

The Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 set the number of Representatives in the House to 435, which is in conflict with the Constitution’s Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3, which states “The Number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty Thousand…”  Please note that this is NOT an Amendment to the Constitution, but a law passed by Congress.

The effect of both of these acts is to make both the House and Senate less accountable to the People of the United States.  People cannot pressure the Legislatures of their state to remove a Senator that does not represent them, and a Representative can ignore a vocal minority of voters in their district because of a dilution of representation.

The result of the above is a move away from a Republic to a Democracy.  This is disturbing from many angles as Democracy has been defined as “majority rules” or “mob rule.”  Even worse, countries with a purely Democratic government have failed miserably, usually from the inside (i.e., power-hungry politicians, for one).

And the political parties are taking advantage of all the above and then some.

The American People are beginning to wake up, although not quickly.  The rise of Donald Trump is but one sign that this is happening, although it is my personal opinion that Trump is not the correct person for the Office of the President of the United States.

However, the American People cannot depend on one person to right the ship that is the USS United States.  It will take more than that – election and oversight of the people being elected to governmental offices by the voters.  We cannot elect and forget because that is exactly how We The People allowed the government, the politicians, and the bureaucrats to accumulate the power that they have.

Discrimination or What?


I have been and continue to be discriminated against as well as been harassed, called names, and otherwise maligned.  For instance:

  • I have been denied entrance to various places of business.
  • I cannot enter various government buildings unhindered & without scrutiny.
  • I cannot step onto the property of the Post Office without committing a Federal crime.
  • I do not have a criminal record, but am often portrayed by the media as a criminal.
  • Various public figures have indirectly called for my incarceration or worse.
  • I have been called “a nut” and other names by the media.

Can you guess why?

It is because I hold a Michigan CPL (Concealed Pistol License), and believe in our Second Amendment.

As to the first three items in the list:  Yes, I can go to these places, but only if I disarm myself & leave the safety of my family and myself to others (why would I want to do that?).  For the next three, various media outlets and celebrities call for my forcible disarmament and/or incarceration and/or bodily harm for simply exercising my Second Amendment rights.

Now my reaction to a lot of the above is to simply avoid these establishments except when absolutely necessary.  It’s not to run and scream to the media or hire attorneys to sue these various entities into compliance.  Quite unlike another group…

The reaction by the militant arm of the LGBT lobby to my home state of Indiana’s passage of their version Religious Freedom Restoration Act has, in my opinion, been way over the top.  Considering that there has been a Federal law signed by their hero Bill Clinton and 19 other states, my question would be:  Why now?

Their vocal objections to the law has nothing to do with a baker or pizzeria denying catering a homosexual wedding based on a religious point of view.  If it did, then why only target a Christian-based business?  Why not a Muslim-based business offering the same services?  Here’s my humble opinion why…

The LGBT lobby is wanting to force religious organizations to remove bans against homosexual behavior in not only their policies, but scriptures as well.   They want to do this by having judicial decisions and laws passed banning discrimination based upon any religious practices to the contrary, and to ban scriptures describing homosexual behavior as a sin as hate speech.  This way, their lifestyle is then legitimatized from both legal and religious standpoints. 

Since the dominant religion in the United States is Christian-based, then this will be the religion that will be targeted.  It also does not help that the Christian religion is tolerant (hate the sin, love the sinner), and several denominations have reversed their stances on homosexual practices within their church. 

Thus, this is more about forcing acceptance and tolerance over the rights of others rather than respecting those differing opinions and rights.  The militant LGBT would rather ignore the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to further their agenda.  Otherwise, those same people who were supposedly denied service by a baker on religious grounds would do exactly what I would have done – find another bakery to fill their requirements.  Surely, there must be LGBT friendly bakers somewhere in that city…

Dr. Brian Joondeph has the following to say about the Indiana law on AmericanThinker.com (excerpts from article):

What exactly is so controversial about this Indiana law? It “Provides that a state or local government action may not substantially burden a person’s right to the exercise of religion,” unless there is a “compelling governmental interest.”

Maybe this is why the left is in a lather, as their worldview is that most of what we do in our mundane daily lives is a “compelling interest” of the government. What light bulbs we buy, how warm or cool we keep our homes, what size soft drinks we order, whether we sprinkle salt on our food, and so on.

One man’s compelling government interest is another man’s liberty or pursuit of happiness. As I wrote last year, what is the compelling government interest in whether a Christian baker chooses to not bake a cake for a same sex wedding? Or whether a kosher Jewish deli refuses to serve a ham and cheese sandwich? Or whether a Muslim printer declines to print copies of a Mohammed cartoon?

These are the freedoms enshrined by the First Amendment. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” If a Muslim female wears a hijab to school, this is a constitutionally protected right. Why are bakers and photographers not afforded the same constitutional protections?

Indiana, along with 19 other states, enacted a law allowing its residents to practice their religion free from government scrutiny. It took the 20th such state law to garner the attention of the left.

Yes indeed…it took them this long to figure out that many people, including their beloved Democrats, actually believe that the right of People to follow their religious convictions rather than the demands of a few.

The First and Second Amendments of the Constitution reinforce the Rights of the People that no government or organization can legally or morally subvert.  These are the Rights of the People to be respected by all, not excepted by a few.

(In the interests of full disclosure, I have friends and a cousin who are homosexuals.  While they want legalization of their partnerships, they also respect the rights of others.)

Who is Failing the Republic?


It never seems to end.  Government is on the warpath to enforce the 11th Commandment (“Thou Shalt Conform”) by opposing any resistance to the will of various bureaucrats up to and including our elected leader residing at 1800 Pennsylvania Avenue. 

So what happened to our country and who’s to blame?  I’ve addressed this before, and the answer is still the same.

We have…not the Constitution, nor our politicians…we have.

Government has gotten too big to control.  Our politicians are out of control.  Various groups cite and demand “rights” which are not rights but privileges over their fellow citizens.  Taxes are no more than legalized theft to pay off the politically connected while supporting the poor by keeping the EFT cards filled.  The rule of law is now no more than a suggestion to the powerful, and a weapon to keep the masses in check.  And last, elections are a popularity contest rather than a job interview to put the most qualified people in charge.

We, The People, have let it happen, and continue to let it happen.

I’m watching the political theater in Washington, and the plotline reads like a Shakespearian tragedy – In the end, both protagonists, antagonists, and bystanders are all beat-up, bloody, or dead.  It matters not who they are, disaster is immanent.

The Senate’s letter to Iran (political stupidity more than being constructive), the Hildebeast’s private email server (a violation of both law and public trust), Congress’s cave-in on the President’s amnesty funding plan (traitorous and illegal no matter how you look at it), heightening of racial tension (anything is supposedly motivated by racial hatred, including law enforcement and defending oneself), NSA violations of privacy (metadata datamining and storage without a warrant), “hate speech” double standards (Blacks can say the “N” word, but Whites cannot), bans on ammunition (violates all common sense and the 2nd Amendment), corruption and malfeasance beyond imagination (think Solyndra for starters), mind-numbing and contradictory regulations (just ask a business owner) – All is theater, bad theater at that, that affects each and every one of us in some way.

Indeed, with our Constitutional scholar President constantly violating the Constitution and the laws of the United States, is it too far of a stretch that this President will deconstruct the Constitution and Congress along with it?  And would anybody take notice or protest?  Apparently, one person wouldn’t care:

Yes, indeed…let’s elect a King, an Emperor, a Dictator.  Look at the various countries in South America and across the world, and see how that has worked out for the people in those countries…

As it is, Our Republic is in trouble.  We need to remove the politicians that are the problem, and put in there place people (not politicians!) that will put this country back on the path of prosperity and greatness.  You see, we really don’t have a choice, not if we wish to remain a free people.

Constitutional Crisis?


“All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.” – United States Constitution, Article I, Section 1

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” – Presidential Oath, United States Constitution, Article II, Section 1

“The President…shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.” – United States Constitution, Article II, Section 2

“The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” – United States Constitution, Article II, Section 4

This past week, President Obama violated his Oath of Office and the Constitution by essentially bypassing the Constitution of the United States with his Executive Order concerning illegal immigration.  Only Congress can create laws concerning the legality of immigration by people of foreign birth, the penalties of violating such laws, and procedures for legal immigration.  The President, through his Administration, is charged with upholding said laws, not to change, selectively ignore, or violate.

I will not speculate on what Congress’s response will be to this naked power grab by the President.  The leadership and quality of people that we have in Congress leave much to be desired.  The lack of spines in that legislative body would leave a chiropractor broke.

Regardless, I must say that the Members of Congress and the President do not have respect for the Constitution of the United States nor for the People of the United States.  If they did, we would not have legislation like the Affordable (!?!) Patient Protection Act (aka Obamacare) nor scandals such as warrantless NSA spying, the IRS targeting specific groups, or even the Executive Action of last week.  All of these are violations of the various Oaths of the members of Congress and the Administration as well as various codes & statutes, and no one has been held accountable in a meaningful way for these violations!

This last reminded me of something I wrote last year at both Wise Conservatism and Tom’s Place:

I see the President in his actions and speeches toward his political opposition, and his demeanor toward anyone who opposes him does not befit the Office of the President.  His attitude is “I won, you lost, so do as I command” to not only Conservatives, but his own party and the American People.  The sheer arrogance is on display for anyone with half a brain and paying attention to his speeches of no compromise to his will.

And this is exactly what we have in our government at the highest levels:  Naked arrogance toward the American People.  Our government is a large, bureaucratic, insatiable beast that has incredible power which has become increasingly politicized and whose purpose is not to serve the American People, but to serve itself and the politically connected.

With this latest action by President Emperor Obama, the People of the United States are waking up to the fact that the Liberal/Progressive agenda personified by President Emperor Obama is at odds with the desires & wishes of the People of the United States and the Constitution of the United States.  There were massive outcries against ObamaCare before it’s passage by Congress, and the same for the latest Executive Order concerning illegal immigration reform.  The People were not heard, the politicians did what they wanted, and The People are not pleased.

The recourse that We The People now have is to pressure the newly elected Congress to restore the balance of power as stated by the Constitution, and for the Courts to direct the enforcement of the laws of the United States by the Administration.

We The People have no other choice.

Tea Party, Tea TeamsUSA and the Defend the Constitution Rally


I have been away for a while. I took my family, well most of them anyway, down to Waynseboro, Tennessee for the Defend the Constitution Rally that was held here April 25th, 26th and the 27th. The last day of it, I couldn’t go to because I had to head home. During my absence, Tom kept us going by writing. So Glad that he is here.

Now for the rally:

There were not as many people there as I had hoped for but I got to meet a lot of great people that I have been talking too, and listening too for a long time.

From http://www.wildbillforamerica.com I got to listen to, and record in video his talk, as Bill was one of the speakers. I have been a member of his Tea Teams USA for a couple of years now, and have not been doing much with it, but I think now is the time to begin again on that.

I am going to be working on a new masthead for this blog, with the same photo, but some changes. The URL for my show needs changing and I need to add the logo for Tea Teams USA, which I am going to be actively promoting, as they take the Tea Party to the next level. Members are encouraged to contend for God and Country, with the principles upon which the United States was founded and which guided this nation to the pinnacle of freedom, prosperity and good works for the benefit of all.

To confront and defeat the anti-American lie-beral agenda that is eliminating faith, freedom and prosperity from our lives, as I speak.
Bill and I talked and he said the chapter for Tea Teams USA in Indiana has been kind of stagnant lately, and he is interested in finding some new leadership for it. I showed my interest and he gave me a bunch of brochures to hand out, and some of the Tea Teams USA patches. He passively agreed to be on my show sometime in the future, as I told him that I had written asking him to be on the show, and he told me he is careful doing that with someone he doesn’t know because he has no idea what they may be up too. He told me that now that he knows me, to re-invite him, and I will be doing that.

And speaking of my show, I got to do it live and on-location from the rally on Saturday, though I was ashamed of myself for making some rookie mistakes like muting my mic when people were talking near me, and I was on my PSA breaks……then coming back and doing a great rant…with the mic muted…so there were sections (two of them) on my show that was silent. Oh well, carp happens, even to us who should know better.

Citizen Control–Epilogue

We, as Citizens of the United States, cannot be foolish enough to believe that our government will abide by the Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and the Amendments to the Constitution without the oversight of the People.  Recent events have punctuated this statement with one if not more exclamation points.

Government overreach into the lives of the People of the United States is approaching Orwellian levels.  The doublespeak and outright lying by the politicians is surpassed only by the levels of hypocrisy exhibited by their words and actions.  And then there is this:

“In half a lifetime, many Americans has seen their God dethroned, their heroes defiled, their culture polluted, their values assaulted, their country invaded, and themselves demonized as extremists and bigots for holding on to beliefs Americans have held for generations.” – Pat Buchanan, “The Death of the West”

Throughout history, various governments have been pitted against the people of that country.  The government seeks control over the citizenry.  The citizenry seeks freedom from the government to carry out their lives as they see fit.  This is but one of the reasons that people came to this land before there was a United States.  And this idea, this concept, is embodied into the Constitution and the Bill of Rights – The PEOPLE have the power over the government.

Somewhere along the line, this has been turned around.  Through a combination of inattentiveness, subversion by both the well-meaning and the power-hungry, and by a blind faith that our government via elected representatives would abide by the foundational documents of this country, the balance of power has shifted from the People to the government.  And government intends to keep that power.

The first four parts of this series outlined that our government, our elected representatives, have slowly but surely put the People in a place where the power now rests with the government.  If one puts aside political convictions and objectively reviews the actions of the past two administrations, one would see that the freedoms of the People of the United States have been severely curtailed.  What remains of our freedoms is only…

Citizen Control–Part 4


“Government’s first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives.” – Ronald Reagan

“Man is not free unless government is limited.” – Ronald Reagan

The above two quotes from Ronald Reagan sum up the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  It is an absolute abomination that the current government violates both of these statements as well as the Founding Documents of this country.  The problem is that many people within this country are oblivious to the apparent disregard our government & politicians have for the principles of our Founding Documents.

This last statement follows up the previous post in this series with this question:  In your government and/or civics classes, did your curriculum include a study of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights?  Or was it a footnote in the history of this country?  In my classes in the 70’s, the answer is “No.”  My son’s textbooks and classes definitely did not.

The Constitution of the United States is a very simple document that outlines the roles and responsibilities of the three branches of government.  The Bill of Rights (the first ten Amendments to the Constitution) are the Rights of the People have over the government.  Both documents are easy to read, and can be read in 15 minutes or less.  But the implications of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are far reaching.

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” – Preamble to the Constitution of the United States

“THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.” Preamble to The Bill of Rights

When read together, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights state that the People have power over the Government, not the other way around.  Let’s take a few examples of where the Government is not following our Founding Documents.

The most recent example of a violation of the Founding Documents is the Federal mandating of the purchase of health insurance.  No where in the Constitution does it state that as a condition of citizenship a person must purchase a product offered by a private company.  Our Supreme Court has played it fast & loose by accepting (wrongly) that this act is a tax – the fact remains that a citizen must purchase this product or face a penalty.

Another issue that is facing the modern Citizen is privacy.  The Fourth Amendment states,

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

The warrantless gatherings of emails, phone records, and other information by the NSA is a violation of the Fourth Amendment if not in practice, then in spirit.  Now I understand that the Patriot Act supposedly authorizes the gathering of such records, and if so, the Patriot Act violates the Fourth Amendment.

The Fifth Amendment states:

“…nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

In 2005, the Supreme Court held that government, under eminent domain law, could transfer property from one private party to another if “just compensation” is given and the transfer is in the public good.  At issue was a person did not want to sell their property to a developer wanting to build a shopping mall.  For the sake of jobs and tax revenue, the government sued and won.  This ruling legalized the virtual theft of private assets on the whim of whoever is in power, and I believe in violation of the Fifth Amendment, no matter what the Supreme Court ruled.

It is now up to the average citizen to educate themselves as to the rights of a Citizen of the United States, and to what limitations that the government is legally to follow.  In today’s low-information voter, that isn’t likely to happen until government personally impacts that person.  Usually, it is then too late.

We must indeed be vigilant and vocal with our representatives, holding them accountable to their oaths to this country and to the People they represent.  Otherwise, we will indeed get the country we truly deserve.

Citizen Control–Part 3

In the first two parts of this series, I have shown that our government is in the process of controlling the United States citizenry through economic means (taxes and rampant spending),  unfettered interference (mind-numbing laws & regulations), and an increasing reliance upon government for daily needs by the population (Welfare, healthcare insurance, and other subsidies).  And government, via the political class, is hell-bent on keeping their power over the People.

One of the ways that government has been keeping control over the population has been in the field of education.  “Common Core” is only the latest of education schemes designed to inhibit learning and increase dependence upon government to “help.”  I seem to remember in my earlier years the “new math” craze where the right answer didn’t matter as long as the method was correct (which is utter BS, by the way – if the method is correct, you will arrive at the correct answer).

I was taught to read using phonics.  My son was encouraged to use the whole word method (i.e., word memorization).  I will tell you right now, trying to memorize a dictionary is impossible unless you are a savant.  To this day, he has difficulty reading even after tutoring in phonics – his Asperger’s Syndrome inhibits his “unlearning” a faulty method.

Which is why we appear to have 50 million functional illiterate people

There have been several news articles in recent weeks concerning Common Core, especially math.  The following graphic is a perfect example why this learning methodology isn’t worth the paper it’s written on:

I’m pleased to see my home state of Indiana has rejected Common Core lock, stock, and barrel.  More states and school districts are following suit.

One of the things that irritated me beyond belief with the school system is that they constantly teach how to pass a test, usually leading up to the SAT or ACT standardized tests for admittance to colleges and universities.  It frosted me to see kids doing well on these tests, getting accepted to colleges and universities, but having to take remedial classes just so they would have a half a chance to make it through the first semester.

And the above is in addition to the “let’s make everyone feel special” movement to supposedly boost self-esteem.  Let me tell you – when my son got out of high-school, expected to walk into a business expecting to get a job, and was promptly rejected multiple times, he found out very quickly that the world is not a fair place by any stretch of the imagination.  He found out what the schools were saying was wrong and his old man was right – self-esteem is earned and learned, not given out like candy and bogus grades.

President Carter created the Department of Education in 1979 ”to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.”  In my humble opinion, the opposite is true – other countries are surpassing the United States despite more money being funneled into the education system (NPR report here).  We are not even in the top 20 of developed nations.

So here’s where we are now at:  Children and young adults are graduating from high school and college without a firm grasp upon the basics of reading, writing, arithmetic, and critical thinking skills.  The result is that we now have a undereducated population, otherwise known as the low-information voter who is easier to be manipulated because they have not learned these basics.

It’s not a big stretch to hear Fred Sanford telling the country, “You big dummy!” and it be true.  The ship of public education in this country is sinking fast, and the public is jumping ship to private and charter schools – at least those that can afford it.  For those that cannot, they will be subjected to an expensive, sub-standard education mandated by faceless bureaucrats at the State & Federal levels.

Pity, for no one knows what potential is lost by the under education of children…and the resulting increased control of those same children as adults.
