Quarantined in Michigan

As many of you know, I have lived in Michigan for the past 20 years after growing up in Indiana & working around the country. It’s a beautiful state, and we’ve enjoyed living here. That is, until the current governor appears to be spreading her socialist wings and trying to turn the state into Commifornia…

For instance (excerpts from The American Spectator post “The Worst Governor in America” by Robert Stacy McCain)-

Executive Order 2020-42 is titled, “Temporary requirement to suspend activities that are not necessary to sustain or protect life,” and is quite specific about which activities are and are “not necessary.” Stores with “more than 50,000 square feet” (e.g., Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot) are ordered to close areas of the store “by cordoning them off, placing signs in aisles, posting prominent signs, removing goods from shelves, or other appropriate means” that sell carpet or flooring, furniture, and “garden centers and plant nurseries.”

Barbecue grills, lawn chairs — anything in the garden section is now  verboten in Michigan. (Also includes selling American flags).

Whitmer imposed a strict prohibition on “not necessary” travel, which means that Michiganders are forbidden even to visit their own private vacation cabins in the “Up North” part of the state.

Lottery tickets can still be sold right along with pot and alcohol.

Abortion clinics are still open, barber & hair salons are closed.

Boating and golfing are prohibited.

Prisoners were released from lockup, although the public was assured that these were low-level criminals that presented no harm to the public (for which I call “BS”).

Last month, the governor actually threatened the licenses of medical professionals who prescribed the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) for coronavirus patients. A week later, however, Whitmer was trying to secure supplies of HCQ from the federal strategic stockpile.

The term “insanity” has been used to describe Governor Whitmer’s actions concerning her response to the epidemic. I seem to remember her complaining that the Federal government (aka President Trump) not being prepared for the outbreak, however, my question to the Governor would be “What have you done to prepare the State of Michigan for any disasters like this?” The answer to that question would most likely be crickets…

But what about the Federal government? Veronique de Rugy at the American Institute for Economic Research had this (h/t to Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit):

The lack of preparedness at every level of government (federal, state, and local) has nothing to do with a lack of funding or inadequate staffing. Instead, it has everything to do with governments’ bloat, mismanagement, cronyism, and poor focus.

That’s particularly true of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In theory, the prevention of diseases like this one is the agency’s entire reason d’être. It is right there in its name “Disease Control.” Its mission statement page also makes the centrality of this goal clear. It states as its priority “confronting global disease threats through advanced computing and lab analysis of huge amounts of data to quickly find solutions.”

Apparently, not really.

While there is a lot of blame to go around, it is no secret how much the CDC is to blame for the country’s lack of preparedness to take on the coronavirus (followed very closely in ineptitude by the Food and Drug Administration). The agency’s failure to understand the severity of this virus, to provide useful advice to the American people and to political leaders, and to deliver appropriate testing capabilities has been widely documented.

Some random thoughts that tie into all of this:

Projections for infections and resulting deaths have not lived up to reality. Doctor Fauci has publicly walked back the projections several times. Obviously, the models that they are using are about as useless as the climate change models…

Watching the career politicians jump through hoops to slip in funding for their pet projects only shows that we cannot trust our elected officials to be good stewards of the public. They’re not representing the people that elected them, but the party that supports them through the special interests that bought their allegiance.

Still true:

“To rely on the government for anything long-term is stupidity at best and insanity at worst.” – Tom Roland, Equal Diversity

More and more governors are issuing executive orders restricting travel, closing businesses, restricting or banning firearm sales & processing of licenses – in other words, restricting freedoms that we all take for granted (or at least the clueless). Make no mistake – the power-hungry socialists are taking full advantage of exercising their authority over the citizens of their states. They are definitely taking notes on what they can do and how they can do it. And the media, our supposed independent watchdog, will be complicit in anything they do.

Which is probably why there were an estimated one million new gun owners last month. We The People do not trust our government nor the media. With the various episodes of tyranny and stupidity in unequal measures, who can blame us? As as a side note, I understand a good portion of those new owners were Liberals!!

I’m starting week 5 working from home. Cabin fever is setting in despite the daily walks and occasional trips to the store. While I don’t miss the trip back and forth to work, there is something to be said about routine. I will be happy to get back to something resembling a “normal” routine. What that will be is anyone’s guess.

Stay well, stay safe.
