As I suffered through one of the worst colds that I’ve had for a couple of years this past weekend, I watched a few of the highlights of the March for Our Lives that took place in various cities this past weekend. Supposedly organized by the students from Parkland (we’ll get to that later), they protested, carried signs, and made speeches to restrict a Civil Right that Americans have had before this country was founded.
Yes, these students, thrust into the spotlight and funded by various anti-gun groups, used their 1st Amendment rights to protest the 2nd Amendment rights of all Americans.
Alinsky would be proud.
I fully believe that the Bloomberg funded anti-gun groups were just waiting in the wings for another tragedy committed by an unhinged murderer to spring this massive protest across this nation. Funding was in place, the plan was made, and the waiting was over. You and I know that there is no way that today’s high-school students could single-handedly organize and execute such a massive protest without the deep pockets of established anti-gun groups. If I’m wrong, then I would like proof.
But even then, what were they protesting? Many of the marchers were ignorant of what existing laws are on the books, and what they wanted to have changed. Which made for some interesting footage such as:
- When asked what the definition of an assault rifle was, one protester expressed incredulity at the question and accused the questioner as being stupid even though she couldn’t define the term (if we’re going to go and ban something, let’s agree on the terminology).
- A protester carried around a sign stated that it was harder to get the poster board for the sign than getting an assault rifle (sorry that the line was long, but you don’t have to fill out paperwork and a background check to buy poster board).
- Another protester carried a sign stating that her uterus was regulated more than firearms (I’ll let you decide on the level of WTH of that statement).
The highlights of the students wasn’t much better. One of the speakers struck a pose after his speech that was reminiscent of a Black Power or Nazi salute. Another wore the Cuban flag on her sleeve as she delivered her speech. But what was missing was viewpoints from their fellow students that supported firearm ownership, and Black student representatives from Parkland (approximately 25% of the population). Obviously, opposing views or straying from a narrative wasn’t allowed, nor were facts such as:
Fact: The FBI states that in 2016, 374 murders were committed by rifles. However, 1,604 murders were committed using “knives or cutting weapons.” Additionally, 656 murders were committed with hands, fists, or feet.
Fact: Almost all mass-murders in the past 20 years have been committed in a designated “gun-free zone.”
Fact: The NRA does not have blood on it’s hands as they haven’t killed anyone. It nor any of its members has ever been implicated or participated in a mass-murder, nor advocate that criminals or psychopaths should have guns. They are, however, a pain the butt to those who want to deprive any law-abiding American of their civil right to own a weapon.
Fact: People with concealed carry permits commit crimes at a far less rate than police officers.
Fact: No gun-control law that has been proposed or enacted has had any demonstrable positive effect upon crime or the murder rate (think of the gun-free city of Chicago for this one) for the simple fact that criminals do not obey laws.
Fact: After Great Britain essentially banned firearms, home invasions, assaults, robberies, and assaults with knives increased. The problem with knives is so bad that Great Britain is now having “Knife buybacks” in an attempt to reduce “knife violence”. (by the way, knives are a horrible self-defense option – you are at a disadvantage going up against anyone who is bigger, stronger, and more skilled than you would be).
And we can go on and on with one uncomfortable fact after another which destroy each and every argument for gun control.
I like Mike Huckabee’s statement on the protests:
“I salute these students for their passion and their energy, and for their interest in helping to shape public policy. But I would say this to them: Emotion is a terrible substitute for truth.”
Last, I received the following this morning from one of my friends, Mike. It bears reading:
“The more people who are armed, the more dangerous it becomes to be a criminal or a tyrant. If every adult who is capable of bearing arms did so routinely it would be so dangerous that only the bravest and the most disturbed individuals would engage in petty crime and tyranny could find no place to take root. The prohibition of arms is the authorization to even the most cowardly of individuals to engage in intimidation, creates fertile ground for criminal gangs, and cows the honest and honorable into increasingly timid subjects who persistently beg for strongmen to protect them and their families. Which is the siren song that leads to tyranny as no man may be fully trusted with the power to rule others without being corrupted by the temptations, fatigue and impossible responsibility of protecting large numbers of timid and increasingly irresponsible individuals, even if his motivation was pure. Those who deny the right to keep and bear arms to others enslave them to their own will and use their superior might to enforce that will on those who wish otherwise. There is no more clear boundary between a free man and a slave than whether or not they are free to keep and bear arms without the approval, consent or permission of another. Those who deprive others of the Inalienable Individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms are engaged in the taking of slaves! The right to keep and bear arms is the seed of Liberty, its absence is the seed of tyranny. You reap what you sow, choose your crop wisely. The rights of the Individual are not subject to the approval, authorization, consent or sanction of others as they are an innate and inseparable aspect of the human being and can only be respected or violated. A free society is based on the mutual respect for the Inalienable rights, person and property of others. The more consistently we do so, the better we will be and the better our world will become and the more freedom will reign. The converse is also true, and the less we respect the Inalienable rights of every Individual human being, the worse we are, the more tyrannical society becomes, the more completely everyone is a prisoner of ever more dire circumstance. Liberty bears sweet fruit which multiplies exponentially the fruits of labor, the joy of life and the wonder of invention where everyone is constantly differentiated by their talents, skills, ethic and character, so long as there is freedom. Whereas tyranny starves, dwindles and brutalizes in an orgy of cannibalistic violence and oppression yielding inexorably towards genocide and a rigid society of moral cowards terrified to differentiate themselves lest they be singled out and devoured by the undifferentiated hungering beasts which surround them, beasts who could have been men if only they were free.
“Heed this warning, for there may be no more, given the advance of censorship and the penultimate power of the state over the Individual. It is a personal choice which You must make, whether freedom shall reign or perish from the earth.
“Please pass this message on to others, make copy and spread it in physical and virtual copy far and wide. There are too many who do not know the difference between liberty and slavery. If we are to abolish slavery in all its forms we must insure that it is easily recognized by those who might otherwise, in ignorance, act to enslave themselves and others. We must succeed in this if we are to abolish tyranny, and be truly free. Take Your part of the responsibility for Your own freedom and see that the enemies of Liberty do not have the ignorant to fill the ranks of their legions. Time is forever running out!
“And furthermore the progressive establishment is a threat to human liberty and therefore it must be abolished!”
That is why this weekend’s protests should be renamed a “March for Madness.”
