Al-Qaida’s longtime No. 2 leader, a doctor from a prominent Egyptian family who worked with Osama bin Laden for decades, has succeeded the slain terrorist as head of the global network, the group said Thursday.
It really isn’t a surprise, the choice of this man to be the successor of Osama bin Laden.
The 60 year old, who has been Al Qaida’s second in command for years, under Osama bin Laden is the one that has been increasingly the face of Al-Qaida over the last years.
Ayman al-Zawahri has long brought ideological fire, tactics and organizational skills to the terror network. The trained surgeon was first to come up with the use of the suicide bombings and independent terror cells all of which have become trademarks of Al-Qaida.
Right now he is believed to be living in the area of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, and has been seen and heard in dozens of video, and audio tapes over the last few years, as he has increasingly become the face of Al-Qaida, as bin Laden started to keep a lower profile.
Zawahri and bin Laden first crossed paths in the caves of Afghanistan in the late 1980’s, and is believed to have provided medical treatment to bin Laden, and other Islamic fighters battling against Soviet forces. It is this allience that is believed to have formed into the terror network that attacked America in 2001.
It is believed in U.S. Intelligence that Zawahri lacks the appeal that bin Laden had, but has been a controlling micromanager of Al-Qaida’s affairs. This is also from the AP article mentioned above.
In a videotaped eulogy released earlier this month, al-Zawahri warned that America still faces an international community of Muslims that seek to destroy it.
“Today, praise God, America is not facing an individual, a group or a faction,” he said, wearing a white robe and turban with an assault rifle leaned on a wall behind him. “It is facing a nation that is in revolt, having risen from its lethargy to a renaissance of jihad.”
Al-Zawahri has also heaped praise on bin Laden, who was killed in the May 2 raid by U.S. Navy SEALs in Pakistan, and criticized the U.S. for burying him at sea.
“He went to his God as a martyr, the man who terrified America while alive and terrifies it in death, so much so that they trembled at the idea of his having tomb,” he said.
So today, Al-Qaida has a new leader. Will he be another bin Laden? No, probably not, but this man is no surprise to anyone who knows the workings of the terror group.
May God Bless our efforts to help get America back, and put God back into our country.
God Bless America. God Bless Americans. And Bless us to start using more common sense.
