Thanksgiving post from Wise Conservatism…..

“Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor — and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me ‘to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

“Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be — That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks — for His kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation — for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of His Providence which we experienced in the tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed — for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted — for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which He hath been pleased to confer upon us.

“And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions — to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually — to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed — to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn [sic] kindness onto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord — To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease [sic] of science among them and us — and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best. — Given under my hand at the City of New York, the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.”

Can you imagine my friends, a sitting president today, invoking God like He was, in this quote? The first paragraph of this Thanksgiving Proclamation is essentially thanking God for our founding and our Constitution. Now, if you don’t know this, this was George Washington’s first Thanksgiving Proclamation, given on October 2, 1789! Yes, the Father of our country, as Rush put it, and as it should be put. Our first president.

We have people like Obama telling us that America is NOT a christian nation, yet all the proof, if you wish to go look, shows that God was involved in all the forming of this great nation, in a very Christian way I might add. But think for a moment, what would the ACLU have said to Bush if he had said something like this? HMMMM? I didn’t say Obama, because he wouldn’t say something like this……but I can tell you.

Like I said, this was George Washington’s first Thanksgiving Proclamation. No where in it was there anything about the Pilgrims, or the Indians. No where in there is there anything about socialism or welfare. No where in there is anything about starving or sickness. There is nothing in there about anything that the Liberals and the media has led us to think should be in a speech by a sitting president about Thanksgiving. The number of references to God the “Almighty” would set the ACLU on fire today. If a president today would say something like this for Thanksgiving, the ACLU would probably fire off a law suit, along with many other “so called” groups who would sue because it was intolerable to have to be subjected to listen to such a speech. The fact that if it offends you, you turning it off doesn’t occur to anyone anymore.

See my friends, just how far off course from the course we were started on we have allowed this country to go? The America today has almost no resemblance to the America that was started. And to me folks, that is what is problematic here. We, thanks to our leadership and the entitites that they have in bed with them, have done everything they can to take losing our freedoms off the table as something that is bad. And no matter how they try to spin it folks, losing our freedoms, in anyway, is problematic at least. And it needs to be stopped.

We here at the Wise Conservatism household wish each and everyone of you a happy and safe Thanksgiving. God Bless you all.

God Bless America, her troops, her allies and her people

About Robert P. Garding

I am a Reagan Conservative, who is very alarmed at the Liberals who have just lost their majority over our government, but continue to act like it never happened. They have to be stopped. NOW or even sooner.

I’m so glad the ACLU wasn’t around when George Washington gave this Thanksgiving proclamation, or at any other time during America’s founding. This proclamation shows just what an open and unapologetic role religion once had in America’s public life. Oh, how did we let ourselves stray so far from our roots? We can only pray that, like the prodigal, we will find our way back to our Source. I just hope not too much more damage to our nation will be done before we wake up. Great post, Robert.
reply from Robert: Thank you my friend. I hope the same thing. With the new crop of Conservatives who have come up the ranks because of the Tea Party, I have hope….I heard this read on the Rush Limbaugh show, and I had to post it. It shows without a doubt, that we ARE indeed a Christian nation….to the core.

  2. Forget, please, “conservatism.” It has been, operationally, de facto, Godless and therefore irrelevant. Secular conservatism will not defeat secular liberalism because to God both are two atheistic peas-in-a-pod and thus predestined to failure. As Stonewall Jackson’s Chief of Staff R.L. Dabney said of such a humanistic belief more than 100 years ago:

“[Secular conservatism] is a party which never conserves anything. Its history has been that it demurs to each aggression of the progressive party, and aims to save its credit by a respectable amount of growling, but always acquiesces at last in the innovation. What was the resisted novelty of yesterday is today .one of the accepted principles of conservatism; it is now conservative only in affecting to resist the next innovation, which will tomorrow be forced upon its timidity and will be succeeded by some third revolution; to be denounced and then adopted in its turn. American conservatism is merely the shadow that follows Radicalism as it moves forward towards perdition. It remains behind it, but never retards it, and always advances near its leader. This pretended salt bath utterly lost its savor: wherewith shall it be salted? Its impotency is not hard, indeed, to explain. It is worthless because it is the conservatism of expediency only, and not of sturdy principle. It intends to risk nothing serious for the sake of the truth.”

Our country is collapsing because we have turned our back on God (Psalm 9:17) and refused to kiss His Son (Psalm 2).

reply from Robert: Anything to extremes is bad. But if you say that Conservatism is bad, then you just keep things as they are….which is much much worse than it would be if Conservatism took over. I guess you like the status quo. Sorry, but I don’t. I think that Conservatism is the WISE way to go. It has shown us that it works with Reagan, and Bush *to an extent, as he wasn’t conservative, but used some of those ideals like lowering taxes. That and true Conservatism believes God has to be in the mix or it won’t work. Liberalism, takes God out.

Robert, Great post…..Of course this nation was founded on Christian principals. We didn’t even accept Catholics. They settled in a different part of the country….and up until the 20th century they remained apart and only married protestants with a proper dispensation from the pope and only after the couple promised that the children of such a union would be raised Catholic…..We’ve come a long way since that time. For the Good?????I don’t know but none the less, we have progressed. In doing so , I think, we have allowed the “anything goes crowd” mentality to go to far…..Now it’s like trying to close the barn door, after the horse has gotten out..It’ll be hard to get he horse back in the barn….stay well…….
reply from Robert: You are right. We have allowed the “anything goes crowd” mentality to go way too far. But we have to get Christianity back….before Obama destroys it totally.

  4. When a country such as ours turns away from God, tapline, that is NOT “progress.” As Psalm 9:17 tells us: “The wicked shall be turned into Hell, and all nations that forget God.” Hope you will watch this, please:

reply from Robert: Reagan talked about what would happen to this country if we turned away from God too…..and it wasn’t progress he was talking about.

  5. Electing Reagan was also not progress. He, too, gave us Godless government.

    John Lofton, Editor,
    Recovering Republican
reply from Robert: You are wrong. He gave us smaller government, lower taxes, and a prosperity that this country hadn’t seen before, or since. Especially under Obama. Now don’t get me wrong. There were things Reagan did wrong, like not closing our borders. But from what I am getting from you, any government is Godless. There has to be government sir, just not big government. Reagan had the right idea. Make government smaller. He didn’t go far enough, but he did give us prosperity that lasted for over 20 years. We need more of that.

  6. Edisto Joe says:

It seems to me that J.L. RR is using Robert Lewis Dabney’s words as a reference against conservatism, when in fact he is referring to a belief and following of false conservatism. Dabney was one of the south’s most prominent and influential Presbyterian theologians. He was a Calvinist, an old school Presbyterian and a noted social conservative in his time. He was also an ardent supporter of slavery and remained so even after the war. Jackson himself was a conservative and was related to Dabney through marriage. Jackson often sought Dabney’s counsel not only in war but on matters concerning God and the path he should follow. Dabney was well qualified for this. As a Pastor and a professor he taught extensively on systematic and ethical and moral Christianity. Today he would most probably be connected with the Christian Right, Moral Majority, or possibly the far right. Conservatism was his life.
reply from Robert: I thought the words he was using sounded vaguely familar. Thanks Joe. Now I remember. I guess he can’t state facts….just words from an author.

  7. Wrong, Robert. Reagan gave us not only Godless government, but also, like ALL Republican Presidents, BIGGER, more expensive, more debt-riddengovernment than when he came into office. Reagan did not us smaller government! And Godless conservatism — like the conservatism today — was —in no way — part of Dabney’s life. And what I quoted from Dabney ARE facts.

    John Lofton, Editor,
    Recovering Republican
reply from Robert: You are the one that is wrong. What planet did you say you were from? Carter gave us bigger more intrusive government. Clinton also gave us bigger more intrusive government. Reagan downsized it. Bush 1 downsized it and so did Bush 2 for a while. Obama has made it BIGGER than all of them combined. And Dabney’s facts are liberal facts. And they most of the time are lies. You need to read Edisto Joe’s comment on this. He has it right. When it comes to presidents who love bigger more intrusive governments, it is the democrats who do that. Republicans do too…but to a much smaller scale. History proves me right. Democrats make bigger government and more spending just to do it…..Republicans, like Bush did it because of the war that was thrust on us during his administration. Obama has done it because he can. Period.
