Where have all the Consequences gone?

I said a long time ago, that the taking of consequences out of our punishments would make a generation of kids and adults that would have no concept of good and bad. Right and wrong. We are living in that generation, people. With kids bringing guns to school, and yes, I realize that when I was going to school a lot of us had guns too, though most of them were stuck in the back windows of pickup trucks. We didn’t bring them to school to use on someone who made us mad. That is the difference. We knew better.

Back in my day at school, if I had ever done anything that was wrong, the principle of the school could and would spank me and then send me back to class. But, and this is a big one here, but, that wasn’t the end of it.

After I got sent back to class, my parents were called, and they were told what I did…..and then when I got home, I was in trouble all over again. NO my parents wouldn’t side with me. If I got in trouble at school, I got it equally as bad, if not worse at home…….and no, I didn’t blame my parents or try to sue them for it. I took my punishment, because I usually deserved it, and knew the next time I wasn’t going to do that again. I knew right from wrong. And knew, that when I did something wrong, I was in trouble. Getting the punishments that I did, taught me that difference. I knew right from wrong.

But the government came in, and screwed things up as they usually do. They came in and made programs to fix things that weren’t broken, making things really broken and in need of a fix. If the government would just leave things alone, then they wouldn’t need fixing again.

Speaking of CPS, *Child Protective Services* back in about 1974, when I was about 22, I had a couple of friends who were great people. They got married, and had two kids. One was, at the time, about 5 years old, the other was just an infant.

We used to go to the Kettle Restaurant there on San Mateo Blvd, almost every night to have coffee and talk. I always took my future wife at the time, and they always brought their kids.

The children were well behaved most of the time, and the one evening that I remember, the older boy for some reason was acting up. After being told to stop many times, the mother, took him into the bathroom and gave him a spanking., while Kathy, my future wife, went with her, the two guys…..stayed at the table with the baby.

Needless to say, during the spanking, a woman, * and I use the term loosely here* went into the bathroom and said something to my friend, and then walked out and went to the telephone and made a phone call. She turned my friend into Child Protective services, and they came out and took the boys the next day.

When this came up in court, I was there and actually talked during the hearing. I was there to tell the judge about their character. I also had an observation about what happened that really has rung true since that day.
Now people, these two were not child abusers or anything else. The woman who turned them in had stuck her fat nose into someones business where it didn’t belong. But here is essentially what I said there that day in court.

I said: ‘that the government was putting it’s nose into people’s business and it shouldn’t ever be there. The liberals have been taking away our rights and liberties for years, and this is just another example of this invasion of our privacy.
‘The woman that started this whole thing took offense to a child being spanked for acting bad. She had no idea what was really going on, but she made it her business to butt in. And I will tell you where this whole idea of crap is going to end up.
‘We are going to have, in the future, a generation of hoodlums who have grown up without any idea of what is right and what is wrong. To them there will be no consequences for their actions, and there will be no stimulus for them to do the right things. The only input that these children will have, is negative input because when they are good, nothing will be said. When they are bad, they will be called victims by the authorities and they will be coddled by the government and taken away from good parents.
The government is taking away the rights of the parents to parent, and to discipline and to love their children. That is the liberal way of doing things, and judge your part and parcel of this future problem.
We are heading into a time, when our children will be able to talk back to their parents because there will be no respect for their elders like their used to be. There will be no consequences to bad actions that will stop them from doing said bad actions. People in power like you judge will wonder what happened.
I can say now, that if you wonder that in the future judge, and you probably will, then you can think back to this day and what I am saying now, and you will know just what has happened. Because of judges who will make judgments against good people like my friends here, for disciplining their child, when he was bad, we will have murders in our schools, and kids carrying guns all over, and knives being used for the smallest of reasons.’

Sadly, this has all come to pass. We are in a “politically correct” type of society now where everything has to be liberally politically correct. Children cannot be punished by the parents anymore…in some states it is even against the law!

The Democrats and some of the Republicans who are in office in Washington D.C., have taken it upon themselves to take the place of the parents, and be the ones who discipline the children. The problem there is, with government dealing out the punishments, the government also has taken out the consequences of being bad, because in the liberal eye, no kid is bad…..he is just a victim of his environment. But that is wrong. He/she is not a victim of his environment, he/she is a victim of their government taking away consequences and trying to take God out of everything. Like a friend of mine today in the chatroom of my Saturday show at noon on BTR, said, the abuse comes from having no consequences.

Now, I am not saying that child abuse isn’t bad….because it is. What I am saying is that like all government agencies that get started, they start out with a good idea, and then keep getting added onto until it goes overboard and starts making a bad thing out of a good. That is where CPS and other governmental agencies are now. And we are about to elect a president who believe in everything that I have said here is bad. If elected, either Barack Hussein Obama, or Hillary Rodham Clinton will add to the problems by bringing into being more and more goverment programs that will do nothing but break something that doesn’t need fixing. Then, when the problem gets worse because of their interferance, then we will have to have it fixed, when it was okay in the first place. Mark my words here people. Either one of these two people are socialists and would do nothing good for America.

And you think things are bad now? Elect them and just wait. Things will get worse. Much worse.

God Bless America…..
God Bless our Troops…..
God bless my readers here, my listeners on BTR, and my viewers on my video updates…

About Robert P. Garding

I am a Reagan Conservative, who is very alarmed at the Liberals who have just lost their majority over our government, but continue to act like it never happened. They have to be stopped. NOW or even sooner.

I totally agree with you!!! Children are not taught to respect anyone or anything. It is no wonder that there is so much crime in the country.
There wouldn’t be so many lazy people wanting to live off the government had they learned responsibility and disipline when they were young.

Another great post, Robert! I just hope people will wake up before things get worse. And they can get worse.

Why do you have to call PC “liberal” rhetoric….the PC-ization is happening from both sides of the aisle albeit in different ways. I read your blog daily because it is interesting, but I am VERY liberal, yet my mom whooped my butt when I needed it and I do the same with my daughter. I don’t think that the encroaching angle of government trying to enforce PC are simply liberal though……if you spank you get CPS called, if you speak out against Iraq they wiretap you phones, if you use a term someone might find offensive toward EITHER side (conservative OR liberal) you get beat around on blogs…….isn’t talking about “tired of all the liberal rhetoric” enforcing an equally PC (or anti-PC) restriction on debate/conversation?

The PC meaning Politically Correct, IS a Liberal Idea. Just because the Republicans are caving in to the ideas of it means nothing. It just means they are caving in.

I as a Conservative, believe that Liberalism is what is wrong with America today. I have watched the Democrats over the last 40 years, slowly take the rights away from people for the PC part of making the world a better place to live in. It doesn’t. All it does is give the government more power over you and me and takes more and more of our liberties away from us. And it draws on stupidity to reign.

Like Obama on Memorial day saying, and I quote:
“On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors it’s unbroken line of fallen heroes, and I see many of them here in the audience today, our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.”

Now, can you see what is wrong with that quote? If not let me tell you. The stupid things are, this was no blunder told by him, not thinking as he said the speech. His speech was written by writers, who then give it to him to check and proof to make sure that it says what HE WANTED IT TO SAY. The stupid things are that the media didn’t pick up on it, though they would have if he had been President Bush. The stupid thing in those lines? Memorial day is a day set aside to honor the men and women of our military who have fallen and DIED in service of their country. Now, if they are dead, how could he be seeing many of them in the audience? His many many guffaws don’t seem to even interest the press….who, if they were said by McCain or Bush, they would be all over them like stink on a skunk. Liberals, cannot say anything good about America, because to them, America is to blame for everything, and the troops are not their favorite things in the world. If you don’t believe me, then look at President Bush’s last two speeches, which were good ones by the way, and look at how the liberal media tore them up. The liberals will tear up a Republican, even though Republicans are caving in to the whims of the Democrats and the liberals. But let a Republican do the same to a lib? All hell will break loose because then the Republicans are not playing fair….even though it is the same thing the Democrats do.

The difference between Liberals and Conservatives?

Liberals hate America. Everything in the world that is wrong, is America’s fault. Liberals will listen to what the enemy of America will say and believe them…but will NOT believe our troops, or our side of the story when told. Liberals have been trying for decades to take God out of our society, by making laws to prevent Christians from doing anything because of the idea of Separation of Church and State, which by the way was never in the Constitution as they (the liberals and democrats) so love to say. Liberalism, makes new laws to make it easier for Anything but a Christian to have what they want in society. Foot Baths for Muslims are being build on Taxpayer money, but Crosses that have been on hills for decades are always in a fight to remain, because someone is always offended. What about the Christians who are offended because footbaths are being build for Muslims on their dollar? No, that wouldn’t even matter to the libs. I could go on and on with this…..but what would it matter. You wouldn’t understand anyway. Common sense is dead to a liberal.

And to finish….if you spank your daughter when she is bad….good for you….maybe you aren’t as much a liberal as you think. Consequences have to be there for a person to grow up and know the difference between right and wrong. You know this….so there is hope. You still have common sense.

“because of the idea of Separation of Church and State, which by the way was never in the Constitution as they (the liberals and democrats) so love to say.”

Considering that the highest authority regarding interpretation of the Constitution is the Supreme Court (as per the Constitution, mind you), legal precedents suggest otherwise, Robert.

The Supreme Court has time and time again favored the Separation of Church and State as part of the Establishment Clause. http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/church-state/decisions.html

Thomas Jefferson’s own interpretation of the establishment clause is as such “Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their “legislature” should “make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” thus building a wall of separation between church and State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.”

Our earliest leaders supported the idea of Separation of Church and State, at the very least on the Federal Level. So don’t say that it’s un-American or not in the Constitution that this Separation exists.

And while there may be some cases (I googled the issue and found like 4 examples of Airports and Colleges doing this) the cost of something as simple as a footbath is likely not nearly as much as the cost of some of the ornately decorated Christmas Trees (a religious event, mind you… a direct financing of Christian memorabilia.) In what way is the implementation of a footbath which would be open for public use, going to be as direct a violation as tax payer dollars for an explicitly religious monument?

As for the spanking of children, thing … there’s multiple sides to look at here. In most cases, spanking is not that large an issue. It’s simple discipline, indeed. I’m all for spanking as a punishment, as opposed to a time out, which from my own experience, just bored me out of my mind for 15 minutes. But, there are some parents who are explicitly violent about it, who are truly abusing children rather than punishing them.

Your friends may not have been such a case, but children are saved from bad homes in many such cases. You have to weigh out the benefits of such programs with the negatives of them, and then trust defense lawyers to properly doing their job. In the case of your friends, they did not, or you didn’t observe the punishments as having the effects that they did. The children may have had certain bruises and such that were legally the level of abuse.

Things happen, but unfortunately, laws must be widely applicable, and carefully balanced. Your example is just one that needs some reform, and could use more balancing and fine tuning.

But far be it from me to be able to convince you of being wrong.
